Community Concert Series at the Niswonger
The Community Concert Series has a rich heritage in Van Wert County dating all the way back to 1953. A group of local music lovers teamed with Columbia Artists of New York City to form the Van Wert County Community Concert Association. Over the years, the association presented seasons of three to five concerts a year with most of them being performed in the Lincoln School Auditorium and eventually the Marsh School Auditorium. Originally, only season passes were sold and only for a limited amount of time. Work of selling the season memberships and operating the organization was done by dedicated volunteers.
Over the years, attendance grew and then dissipated before seeing another growth in the 1980s and 90s. Many national and international performers graced the Community Concert stages across the country and in Van Wert. The motto was, “A Carnegie Hall in Every Town.” By the time the plans for the Niswonger Performing Arts Center were being drawn up in 2005, Community Concert memberships were at an all-time high of over 700! The capacity of the Marsh Auditorium was around 530. It became obvious that the community of Van Wert could and would support a much larger performance hall.
In March of 2007, the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio opened with a capacity of 1200 seats. It was natural for the Community Concert Series to move its operations in with the Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation, a newly formed non-profit organization which was in charge of programming and operations at the new facility.
Today, the Community Concert Series at the Niswonger continues to bring in world-class performers such as concert pianists, legendary stage productions, dance crews and much more.
Purchasing season passes is still one of the best musical values available today. The entire package of concerts can be purchased for as low as $75. However, some choose to select a single concert and can also create their own Select Series. Either way, Community Concerts continue to flourish in Van Wert as they have for the past 63 years!
